Elements of semiology

This document introduces the field of semiology, the general science of signs proposed by Saussure. While linguistics forms an important part of semiology, studying just one type of sign system, semiology aims to analyze any system of signs from images to gestures to language. However, semiology has struggled to establish itself as most sign systems beyond language rely on linguistic elements. Even systems using objects and images often find their meanings confirmed or expressed through accompanying language. As a result, the study of signs regularly leads back to the analysis of language itself.
