The forgotten ones
In 1942 in Indonesia, 70,000 women and children and 35,000 men were captured and marched into prison camps by the victorious Japanese. Women & children were separated from the men and, for 3 and a half tragic years all contact between loved ones ceased. Shirley Huie interviewed more than 120 survivors now living in Australia & the result is a kaleidoscope of the terrible experiences of their prison camp life. Interned without knowing when freedom would come, these women - emaciated and starving - survived seemingly impossible odds to bring themselves and their children back to peace and safety.
