Indonesian cinema
Because this work has engaged me for so long and has usually been a complement to other work, my debts to others are exсер tionally numerous and varied. While doing other research in Indo-nesia funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (MH 38211) and the National Science Foundation (BNS 8310805), 1 began to think about films and in 1988, with the help of a sabbati-cal leave from the University of South Carolina and a grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, I was able to live in Jakarta to work specifically on cinema. I thank all these foundations and especially their review panels.
