Jean-Paul Sartre - possibly the best-known and most dis cussed modern French writer and thinker was born in Paris in 1905. He was educated in Paris and later taught in schools at Le Havre and Laon. In 1934 he spent a year in the French Institute in Berlin where he became acquainted with modern German philosophy. He then taught at the Lycée Condorcet in Paris. He played an active role in the Resist ance during the war, and afterwards left the teaching profes sion. Since 1946 he has spent his time writing, and editing the magazine Les Temps modernes.
Sartre is a Marxist and the founder of French existential ism. His philosophical works such as L'Etre et le niant (1913) have had a profound effect on modern thought.
