The kite runner
I began writing, like Amir in The Kite Runner, as a boy in 1970s Kabul Though the language in which I write has changed -Farsi, then French, now English one factor has remained constant: I have always written for an audience of one: myself. A given character or a situation piques my interest, and 1 sit down, compelled to see it through. This was how The Kite Runner was written. I had two boys in mind: one conflicted, on unsure emotional and moral ground, the other pure, loyal, rooted in goodness and integrity. I knew that the boys' friend-ship was doomed and that their falling out would impact their lives in a profound way. The why and the how was the reason, the compulsion that led me to write this book, beginning in March, 2001. I had to find out because, in the end, writing to me has always been the self-serving act of telling myself a story.
